Alfred Othieno Ochieng -
Kenya
I am Alfred Othieno Ochieng from Kenya. One of the
things I enjoy most is traveling and experiencing new
places. The United States happens to be one of my favorite
destinations. So, you can imagine how excited I was
at the opportunity to, not only visit, but to study
in the U.S. My best friend introduced me to Santa Ana
College and it wasn’t long before I became a
student pursuing an associate degree with the goal
of transferring to university.
I appreciate the U.S system of education that provides
opportunities for everyone, old and young, and regardless
of previous academic performance. There is always a
chance for someone to start again. Because Kenya is
an English speaking country, the transition to an American
classroom setting was easy for me. The only difference
is in the accent and pronunciation of some words.
The biggest surprise I had in coming to California
was the freeway system. I had never seen such a huge
wonderful road network in my life. It is surely a tourist
attraction in itself. I was also surprised at the diversity
of the student population at Santa Ana College. Not
only will you meet American students, but also students
from all over the world. I have become good friends
with an American student who has been warm, kind and
fun to be with. Apart from helping each other with
our studies, he showed me around the community and
has given me a good introduction to American culture.
My advice to other students and prospective student
is to work hard, concentrate on your studies and remain
focused on your goals. Education is the biggest life
investment you can make.
