Immigration Regulations For International Students

International students are required to enroll in a minimum of 12 units each semester.  Many students feel that they can vary the number of units taken each semester as long as the total units average 24 per year.   Immigration regulations clearly require 12 units per semester.

  • FALL and SPRING enrollment is required, 12 units each semester. Summer attendance is not required unless Summer semester is your first semester.

  • International students must maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or the letter grade of C in coursework.

  • International students must consult the International Student Programs Coordinator or International Student Counselor before dropping or withdrawing from any classes.

  • International students are allowed a maximum of six semesters in which to complete their course of study.

Medical leave from college must be confirmed in writing by a physician at the time of illness.  The statement must give the nature of the illness and the period of time the student is expected to be out of classes.  A student returning from a medical leave must obtain a release from the attending physician.  The release must be submitted to the International Student Office before the student is permitted to resume classes.

Visa Documents & Letters Of Certification

Contact the International Student Center for information and assistance on immigration matters including replacement of lost visa documents, extension of stay, or change of visa status.  You may also request letters of certification regarding enrollment, eligibility to transfer to another college or university, employment, and other matters which may require the preliminary approval of the International Student Center.

Travel

Students must have their I-20s signed before leaving the United States for vacation or any short holidays.  Failure to do so may result in a student being denied readmission to the United States.

Practical Training

While enrolled, international students are eligible to apply for part-time, on campus employment and for one year of full-time training upon completion of the program. Practical training offers students hands-on experience in his/her major – experience that would not normally be available to the student in his/her home country. Students may apply for on-campus or off-campus employment on a part/full-time basis upon completion of their program of study.  For more information, contact our Immigration Specialist at the International Student Center, at (714) 564-6047 or by e-mail: intl_students@rsccd.org
