Orientation Exercises for Biology 239--
Human Anatomy Lecture Online

1 Access your course website.
2 View the Human Anatomy Lecture Online home page.
  • This page is the "gateway to your online course lectures". It provides the links to all parts of this course. Some parts of the course can also be accessed from individual pages.
3 Familiarize yourself with the materials you need to take this online course.
  • Click on the Course Overview for your course. These materials are also located in the Course Information section of Blackboard. Scroll to the bottom of the screen.
  • Click on the back button on your browser. This takes you back to the home page. Click on the Class Calendar. This is the schedule for all events in the lecture and lab portions of this course. Print out a hard copy of these pages or access Blackboard and print all parts of the Course Information section.
4 Practice going to my home page and finding your way back to your course home page using the back button on your browser.
  • Scoll to the bottom of my home page. You can click here to send me Email. This is called a "Mailto"; you will see one at the bottom of every INTRODUCTION page in this site for your convenience. Tell me which class--section number you are in--and sign your FULL name at the bottom of every Email you send me.
5 Access your first lecture.
  • Click on Lecture 1. Introduction to Anatomy. Each lecture has a general information page like this one. Read this page. Notice that this page tells you the names of the lecture topics.
6 Access the first topic in "Lecture 1".
  • Click on Approaches to Anatomy. Read, download, or print this page.
  • Answer the thought questions embedded in the page either now or later. Scroll down the page. Click on back to the top.
  • The Navigation Bar drop-down menu at the top of the page tells you where you are and helps you move to the next topic. All topics in the lecture are listed in addition to the introductory page.
  • Click on the arrow at Select your destination. If you choose Approaches to Anatomy, you will stay on this page. Select it, click Go and try it!
7 Access the second topic in "Lecture 1".
  • Click on Anatomical Terminology from the drop-down menu at the top of Approaches to Anatomy.
  • Click on Go.
  • View the message that comes up before this topic loads. Click OK.
  • Read, download, or print this page.
  • Answer the thought questions embedded here either now or later.
  • If you are at the bottom of this page, click on back to the top.

8 Access the third topic in "Lecture 1".
  • Click on The Body Plan from the drop-down menu at the top of Anatomical Terminology.
  • Click on Go.
  • Read, download, or print this page.
  • Answer the thought questions embedded in the page either now or later.
  • Click on back to the top if you are at the bottom of the page.
9 Return to the Biology 239 Home Page.
  • Click on the Biology 239 Home Page from the drop-down menu at the top of The Body Plan.
  • Click on Go.
  • Look over this page. Try accessing another lecture for practice.
You will read the complete course overview for your class, access your grades, read announcements, Email me and each other, and earn participation points using the threaded Forums in Blackboard (special, course software purchased by the College). Whereas the information you have seen thus far is available to anyone with Internet access, only you can access all areas of Blackboard.
10 When you receive your access letter from the Distance Education Office, LOG IN to Blackboard on the first official day of the semester.
  • Type http://rsccd.blackboard.com/ into your browser window to access the LOGIN page OR click on the link here or on your course homepage.   Bookmark this location.
  • Login by following the instructions you received from the "Distance Ed" office. Usually, this means you should enter your User Name according to the format:  last name_first name.
  • Enter your temporary password.
  • View the "Orientation to Using Blackboard" tutorial at http://www.sac.edu/students/online_classes/Blackboard_Student_tutorials.htm if you need help.

(Warning: Your course may not be available BEFORE the semester officially begins.)

11 View the Home screen.
  • This page lists all of "your online courses". It also lists
    Today's Announcements.
  • Select your course. Click on Human Anatomy and your section number.
12 View the Announcements.
  • Select the correct tab to view any announcements you haven't read.
13 Update your Email address, and select a new password.
  • Click on Tools.
  • Notice that you can "Check your Grade", and "View the Blackboard Manual", etc., in this area.
  • Click on "Personal Information".
  • Enter your correct Email address.You must list a current, reliable Email address in this section.
  • Change your password to one that is any combination of 6 symbols or more, including letters and numbers, and upper and lower case letters. Write the new password down.
  • At any time, you can use your browser's back button to return to a previous screen.
  • Get in the habit of "Checking Your Grade" once a week.

14 Send Email to your classmates.
  • Click on the Communication tab.
  • Click on Send E-mail.
  • Select an option and send an email message to find a fellow student who can meet you for a Chat study session.
15 Read about your instructors.
  • Click on Staff Information.
  • Read my profile. Click the link to my homepage if you want to know more about me, and then return to this page using the back button on your browser.
  • Read the information about your lab instructors and/or teaching assistants for this course.
16 Practice using a Discussion Board!
  • Click on the Discussion Board tab. Posting is mandatory. Check this area and post often; or lose up to 50 points in this course.
  • I set up some forums for you. Click on "Introduce Yourself".
  • START A New Thread to type a message telling us about yourself. Post your message. You risk being dropped if you do not post a message in this forum the first week of classes. Click on a message posted by a classmate, and REPLY to it.
  • Begin working in Forum 1 after you have started reading your textbook and working with the Test Bank. Test Bank questions will be given out in the second or third lab.
  • View the "Using the Discussion Board in Blackboard" tutorial at http://www.sac.edu/students/online_classes/Blackboard_Student_tutorials.htm if you need help.
17 Click on the Course Documents and Assignments tabs.
  • Although your lectures are accessed through the Biology 239 Course Home Page, several Powerpoint lectures are located in Course Documents. If you do not have this program, please download and install a Powerpoint Viewer from http://www.microsoft.com.
  • The Assignments area contains all lab assignments.
18 Print out the list of External Links for this course.
  • This list contains links to all online quizzes and to other helpful sites.
  • Follow the link to the WileyPlus website for your class. Take the assigned quizzes to help you study and to get WileyPlus quiz points! If you purchased a used textbook, you can purchase WileyPlus access at http://www.wileyplus.com
19 Experiment.
  • Click on your course number or Courses at the top of the screen. What happens?

You must attend a weekly, onsite laboratory. Your ticket number indicates a lecture/lab combination. Please attend your lab the first week of classes. Blackboard access will be available beginning the first day of the semester.
