The Entertainment Lighting Technology Certificate is designed to provide professional training for students who have an interest in the technical side of the entertainment industry with a specialty in lighting. Career opportunities in this area include:

  • Lighting technician
  • Lighting programmer
  • Automated lighting specialist
  • Master Electrician
  • Assistant Lighting Designer
  • Lighting Designer

The program provides students with hands on experience and a working knowledge of the creative and technical issues involved with entertainment lighting. Students will study to become proficient in the utilization of both conventional lighting systems as well as the emerging technologies of automated lighting systems. These skills joined with current and contemporary computer applications provide the student with a superior educational experience and prepare the student to be competitive in a variety of lighting occupational fields such as concerts, dance, television, theatre, theme parks, sports arenas, churches, industrial applications, and more.

THEATRE ARTS 131, STAGECRAFT

3 Units

Introduction to technical theatre including basic principles of scenic design; construction, and painting; principles of lighting design, technology and process; plus stage and scene shop procedures. Preparation for on stage crew assignments.

THEATRE ARTS 133, STAGE LIGHTING
3 Units

Theory and practice of modern stage lighting including the design of lighting layouts, properties of varied conventional lighting instruments, and the hang and focus of lighting equipment for college productions.

THEATRE ARTS 134, LIGHTING DESIGN2 units
Basic techniques of lighting design for the stage. Emphasis is placed on the design process, technical and artistic choices, and the development of the practical skills required of a lighting designer.
THEATRE ARTS 165, INTRODUCTION OF INTELLIGENT LIGHTING
1.5 Units
Study of intelligent lighting equipment to include a variety of state of the art lighting fixtures and programming/control consoles. The design capabilities and attributes of these instruments will be investigated for their use and application in the entertainment industry.
Theatre Arts 166A, PROGRAMMING AND DESIGN PROJECTS
1 unit
Exploration of automated lighting through hands-on utilization of control consoles. Students develop design skills and improve their overall understanding of automated lighting techniques while gaining practical experience.
Theatre Arts 166B, ADVANCED PROGRAMMING AND DESIGN PROJECTS
1 unit
Continued exploration of automated lighting through a hands-on utilization of control consoles. Students develop additional design expertise plus increase their proficiency in the utilization of automated lights through practical experience.
THEATRE ARTS 168A, COMPUTER APPLICATIONS FOR LIGHTING
1 unit
Study of WYSIWYG software package to design, plan, and visualize show lights in real time. Applications include WYSIPAPER, to build, edit, and sort instrument data; WYSICAD, to draw a complete plot in a 2D or 3D environment; and WYSIWYG, to simulate show lights in real time.
THEATRE ARTS 168B, ADVANCED COMPUTER APPLICATIONS FOR LIGHTING
1 unit
Advanced study of WYSIWYG software package to design, plan, and visualize show lights in real time. HOG PC is used in coordination with WYSIWYG to allow the inclusion of automated lights into a plot.
THEATRE ARTS 170, ENTERTAINMENT TECHNOLOGY INTERNSHIP
1 unit
Supervised field work in one or more of areas of backstage technologies including lighting, sound, and stagecraft. Skills assessed before placement to match abilities with job requirements.
