Kesha Hondo enthusiastically accepted her position as Assistant Professor of Speech Communication in 2005. Prior to teaching at Santa Ana College, Professor Hondo taught at Goldenwest College, Long Beach City College, Orange Coast College and California State University, Long Beach. Kesha values her experience gained working as a part-time faculty member at theses various colleges; however she considers herself to have a special connection to the Santa Ana community. Kesha’s grandparents relocated from New Orleans, LA to Santa Ana in the late 1940’s to raise their three children in an environment rich in opportunity, thus she feels especially proud to serve a community that has contributed so much to the growth and development of her ancestral history.
Kesha Hondo earned her M.A. in Speech Communication and Master’s Degree in Communication Studies from California State University, Long Beach, both degrees emphasizing Interpersonal and Organizational Communication. She is also a Certified Mediator, trained as a neutral third party participant to assist disputing parties resolve conflicts in juvenile, family, and civil issues. Professor Hondo believes that teaching and learning are synonymous: “When I teach communication, I reinforce to myself who I am and how valuable my relationships with others are in my own life”. It is because of this belief that she continues to enhance her understanding of Communication Theory by keeping up-to-date with current research, as well as enjoying popular perspectives on Communication. Professor Hondo’s areas of instructional expertise include: Interpersonal Communication, Public Speaking, Organizational Communication and Small Group Dynamics.
Ms. Hondo spent her adolescence and the early years of her adulthood struggling with a fear of communicating with others. She credits her community college Speech professors with giving her a life altering experience that allowed her to redefine her self concept while introducing her to an area of study that developed into a true passion. “I am not only enthusiastic about what I teach; I am also compassionate and empathetic towards students who are apprehensive about facing their communicative fears when enrolling in my courses.” Kesha Hondo creates classroom environments that are highly interactive, collaborative and safe. Her teaching methodologies foster skill development, increased confidence, and enjoyment!
