If you plan to discontinue your attendance in this class, you
must fill out a drop slip and submit to the Admissions office.
Otherwise, you will receive a failing (F) grade.
Course Summary
Musicianship will cover a wide variety of skills intended
to improve musical hearing and performance. These skills fall
into the following categories:
- melodic dictation
- sight singing
- interval recognition and singing
- chord recognition and singing
- rhythmic recognition and performance
- harmonic dictation
Class Activities
Each week you will have assignments in all or many of these
areas. You will fulfill the assignments either independently,
with the help of a lab supervisor, or with the help of the
instructor. The following lab supervisors are available for
our class:
- Melody Versoza
- Jeff Jones
- Dan Davenport
- Shane Cadman
- Margaret Tseng
Class Requirements
Each week, you will:
1. sing and clap pieces for a lab supervisor (up to 10 pts. per week, 100 points,
total)
2. Work on one chapter of the Kraft dictation tapes (10 pts per chapter - maximum
of 8 chapters, 80 points). You may take two weeks to get through each chapter.
3. Work on the Tapmaster as directed by instructor (25 points for first 8 week
goal, 25 points for second 8-week goal).
4. Work on a Practica Musica chord program (25 points for first 8-week goal,
25 points for second 8-week goal)
5. Work on a Practica Musica interval program (25 points for first 8-week goal,
25 points for second 8-week goal)
Also we will have for tests throughout the semester to check
your progress in all areas:
week 5 test: 100 points
midterm: 140 points
week 13 test: 100 points
Final: 170 points
You will also get points for your participation in the lab:
32 hours @ 5 points per hour = 160 points
note: your appointment with the lab supervisor will count as one hour of lab
time even though it will probably take about 10-15 minutes
Evaluation:
- 100 points: weekly singing in lab
- 160 points: lab attendance
- 80 points: dictation tapes
- 50 points: tapmaster
- 50 points: chord programs
- 50 points: interval programs
- 510 points: four tests
Grade Scale
- 900-1000=A ;-)
- 800-899= B
- 700-799= C
- 600-699= D
- 0-599= F :-(
