Course Summary

This class involves the continued study of harmony including musical analysis, harmonic graphing, non-harmonic tones, harmonization, figured bass, keyboard harmony and chord progression with special emphasis on music from the late Romantic period. In the last eight weeks, the course will cover materials and literature from the twentieth century. During this period of study, the emphasis will be on compositional technique. This class is required of music majors and open to non music majors. It is assumed that students are concurrently enrolled in Music 114b and have passed both 114a and Music 213.

Class Activities

Class time will include presentation of lecture topics, review of homework assignments, and explanation of keyboard progressions. Students will be expected to interact in all discussions of harmony and, especially, when the class is analyzing music.

Class Requirements

You should do your written homework in a timely manner and prepare for all tests and quizzes. You should also stay abreast of the pieces we will be analyzing in class so that you can contribute to class discussion n\\in a meaningful way.

  • 15%: weekly assignments

  • 20%: quizzes
  • 15%: Composition projects
  • 20%: Midterm
  • 20%: Final

Grade Scale

  • 90 - 100 =A
  • 80 - 89 = B
  • 70 - 79 = C
  • 60 - 69 = D
  • 0 - 59 = F
