Vince Silva returns for his 11th year as head wrestling coach and 12th overall at Santa Ana College.
Silva guided the Dons to the 2009 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Wrestling State Championship. The Dons also claimed the 2009 State Duals Championship as they won every event they competed in.
Along with the pair of team championships, the Dons had three wrestlers win their respective weight classes while Silva was named the CCCAA Wrestling Coach of the Year. The state championship was the third in Santa Ana College history and first since 2005.
Before assuming the duties of head coach, Silva was an assistant under Frank Gonzales in 1998 and 1999. In his first season as head coach, Santa Ana finished 17th at the state meet with two wrestlers earning top three finishes as individuals.
Silva graduated from Santa Maria High School in 1982 where he finishing fourth in the state as a senior. He later attended Oklahoma State University , where he received his bachelor's degree, and earned All-America honors twice while leading the Cowboys to a Big-8 championship in 1988.
Silva started his coaching career as an assistant at the University of Nebraska in 1989. While at Nebraska he was named the "Big-8 Assistant Coach of the Year." He also served as an assistant at the University of Minnesota in 1990. |
