Dons Have Strong Showing in Open Tournament
RIVERSIDE, CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) wrestling team had several strong performances in the Cal Baptist Open Wrestling Tournament as the Dons went up against wrestlers from four-year universities.
Nolan Johnson got the Dons started in the 125-pound weight class as he stormed to the finals before losing to Tyler Iwamura of Cal State Bakersfield. Johnson defeated two wrestlers from host Cal Baptist and one wrestler from Bakersfield on his way to the finals.
Jason Arreola advanced to the semi-finals at 133-pounds before losing to eventual champion Todd Wilcox of Grand Canyon University (GCU).
Bobby Scofield defeated Kyle Wilson of GCU to take the championship at 141-pounds. Scofield defeated wrestlers from GCU, Bakersfield, Cal Baptist and Cal State Fullerton to advance to the finals.
Jose Navarro gave the Dons back-to-back wins as he defeated Jonah Cruz from Cal State Fullerton in the finals at 149-pounds. Navarro also defeated two wrestlers from Cal Baptist in his bracket.
Teddy Bristol (157-pounds), Daniel Kennedy (174-pounds) and Jimmy Botheras (197-pounds) each advanced to the semi-finals of their weight class.
