Santa Ana Takes Third Place in State Championships

SANTA ANA , CA – Ivan Sanchez (Santiago HS) and Devin Velasquez (Tascosa HS) won individual state championships on Saturday as the Santa Ana College wrestling team finished third in the State Championships at Fresno City College.

Sanchez won the championship in the 125-pound weight class by a final score of 12-4 defeating Jason Carillo of Cerritos College . Velasquez was the champion of the 157-pound weight class as he defeated Sinai Pezzat (Fresno City College) 2-1 in two overtimes.

The Dons, who sent nine wrestlers to Fresno, had five wrestlers reach the final round at the championships. The other wrestlers to reach the finals were Gabe Aguilar (Mater Dei HS), Jose Serrato (Santa Ana HS) and Tom Eaton (Jefferson HS).

The defending State Champions ended the tournament with 126 team points behind Sierra College (127 points) and the new State Champions, Fresno City College who finished with 135 team points. Santa Ana was the highest finishing team from Southern California finishing ahead of the Southern California Regional Champions Cerritos College (101.5 points) and Palomar (87 points).
