Santa Ana Sends 10 Wrestlers to State Championship

SANTA ANA , CA – Nine members of the Santa Ana College wrestling team qualified Saturday for the State Championships at Fresno City College to be held on December 9-10 with a tenth member being awarded a spot in the championships. The wrestlers qualified by placing sixth or higher in their weight class at the Southern California Regionals held at Cerritos College.

Ivan Sanchez (Santiago HS) qualified for the State Championships as a regional champion in the 125-pound weight class defeating Jason Carrillo from host Cerritos College. Joining Sanchez as regional champions were Jose Serrato (Santa Ana HS) in the 141-pound weight class, Orlando Barragan (Sanitago HS) in the 149-pound weight class, Devin Velasquez (Tascosa HS) at 157-pounds and Tom Eaton (Jefferson HS) at 174-pounds.

Other wrestlers qualifying were Gabe Aguilar (Mater Dei HS) who finished second in the regionals at 133-pounds, Hugo Guzman (Laguna Hills HS) who finished fifth at 184-pounds, Manny Hernandez (Villa Park HS) finished fifth at 197-pounds and Tyler Porras (Westmont Campbell HS) qualified with a third place finish at 282-pounds.

Hernandez qualified for the State Championships in his only competition of the season as he joined the wrestling team at the completion of the football season.

The last member of the team who is going to the championships is Eddie Sanchez (Santiago HS) at 165-pounds who was awarded a spot as the first alternate due to the qualifier from Bakersfield not being able to participate.

The Dons go into their final competition of the season with a chance to defend their 2005 State Championship. The team finished in second place at the So Cal Regionals just one point behind Cerritos with the final team score being 158.5 to 157.5.
