Dons Use Strong First Quarter to Defeat Golden West

SANTA ANA, CA
- The Santa Ana College (SAC) women's water polo team led 7-1 in the first quarter and went on to defeat Golden West College 16-9 in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) match Wednesday afternoon at the SAC Pool.

The Dons (13-5, 3-1 OEC), who are currently ranked #8 in the state, led 11-1 with two minutes left in the second quarter and took an 11-3 lead into halftime. Golden West pulled within five goals at 13-8 in the third quarter, but SAC scored the first three goals to open the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach at 16-8. The Dons held the Rustlers (8-7, 2-1 OEC) to one goal the remainder of the contest.

Sophomore Sara Van Horne (Katella HS) led the Dons with five goals, while Jenna Natalizio (Irvine HS) and Rose Sanchez (Carlsbad HS) each chipped in with three goals. Karli Nihei (Fountain Valley HS) and Alex Farraro (Northwood HS) each finished with two goals and Estela Jimenez (Saddleback HS) finished with one goal to round out the scoring for the Dons.

Goalkeeper Bianca Kibby (Valencia HS) made 10 saves to lead the SAC defense. The Dons will return to action on Oct. 5-6 to play in the Merced Water Polo Tournament.
