Dons Defeats Southwestern in Home Opener

SANTA ANA, CA - Santa Ana College (SAC) defeated Southwestern College (SWC) in the Dons' home opener on Wednesday, September 20 in the Bill Cook Gym at Santa Ana College.

The Dons won the first game against the Jaguars 30-21 with the beginning of the game having a series of ties early. SAC pulled ahead at 12-7 but SWC was able to come back and tie the game at 14-14. The Dons outscored SWC 16-8 to finish out the first game.

The Dons had a 28-23 lead in the second game until SWC cut the lead to 28-26 and later tied the game at 29-29. The Jaguars took the lead at 30-29 and the teams traded the lead up to 34-34 before SWC finally broke the game with two-straight points to win the game at 36-34.

SAC came right back in the third game and held the lead almost throughout. With the game at 12-9, the Dons took over and pulled away to a 20-11 lead. The Jaguars scored three straight to cut the lead to 20-14 but were unable to sustain a charge as SAC won easily by a score of 30-18.

The teams traded the lead early in the fourth game up to a 12-12 tie before the Dons pulled away to a 21-15 and later extended it to 24-18. The Jaguars battled back into the game getting to 26-23. SWC came back to tie the game at 29-29 but the Dons scored the next two points to seal the victory three games to one.

Sophomore Mabel Tanielu (Santa Ana Valley HS) and freshman Diana Quezada (Santa Ana HS) lead the Dons with 20 digs. Freshman Brigina Brock (Katella HS) lead the way with 16 kills.
