SAC's Esquivel Featured In Sports Illustrated

Santa Ana College freshman Michelle Esquivel was featured in the June 28th edition of Sports Illustrated. The Sunny Hills High School graduate was one of seven athletes from around the country that were highlighted for their athletic accomplishments in the national publication's Faces In The Crowd section. Esquivel, who appeared on page 32, became the first woman in California Community College history to win a state singles tennis championship while being concurrently enrolled in high school and college. She upset top-seeded Yuki Hagiwara (Grossmont) in three-sets (6-2, 4-6, 10-2) at the Monterey Country Club in Palm Desert (CA) to claim the title.

PALM DESERT, CA - On Saturday, Santa Ana College freshman and Sunny Hills High School senior Michelle Esquivel captured the California Community Colleges Women's Tennis Singles title with a three-set win (6-2, 4-6, 10-2) over top-seeded Yuki Hagiwara from Grossmont at the Monterey Country Club in Palm Desert (CA). Esquivel battled the 97-degree desert heat and overcame a series of leg cramps to come away with the win.

Esquivel, who is concurrently enrolled at Santa Ana College and will graduate from Sunny Hills High School on June 10, defeated Santa Rosa Junior College's Lauren Hickey (6-0, 6-2) in the first round and Yuba College's Becky Kiehn (6-4, 6-2) in the quarterfinals on Friday, then needed three hours to defeat Cuesta College's Jessie Ritchie (6-2, 6-3) in the semifinals on Saturday to earn a spot in the finals against Hagiwara.

The 2004 Orange Empire Conference Player of the Year finishes the season, 30-1. Her lone loss was to Sierra College's Jenny Soulsavath in the semifinals of the Ojai Tennis Tournament held in April.
