Santa Ana Downs Saddleback For First OEC Win
SANTA ANA, CA - It's been nearly three years since the Santa Ana College women's basketball team tasted victory in the Orange Empire Conference. On Wednesday, the Dons (5-9, 1-4) snapped a 33-game OEC winless streak with a 61-53 win at Saddleback College (5-10, 0-5). The last time that Santa Ana won in league play was on Febuary 20, 2002 when the Dons beat Golden West College, 93-63.

Ahkiah Hunter, who finished with a game-high 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting, scored 12 of Santa Ana's first 14 points and collected two assists and three steals as the Dons opened up an early 18-2 lead. Hunter also had a team-high seven rebouneds. Kelly Chavez and Luz Gonzalez were also in double figures for Santa Ana with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Gonzalez was near perfect as she made 5-of-6 from the field and both of her free throws while Chavez handed out a team-game high four assists.
The Dons made 42 percent (22-of-53) of their field goals and 70 percent of their free throws (14-of-20) while limiting the Gauchos to 37 percent shooting (19-of-52) from the field. Santa Ana managed to win the game despite being outrebounded for the third consecutive game, 46-30.
Saddleback had thre players score in double figures led by Carly Andrews with 17. Andrews, who also had a game-high 16 rebounds, was followed by Nikki Mercado and Amanda Shaw who each added 13 in the loss.
Next: Santa Ana will try and make it two in a row when it travels to Cypress College on Friday, January 21 for another OEC women's basketball contest. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
