Golden West Keeps Dons Winless In OEC
SANTA ANA, CA - Golden West (4-10, 2-1) outscored host-Santa Ana College, 25-7, over the final 10:41 to win its second consecutive Orange Empire Conference game, 66-49, Wednesday. The loss drops the Dons to
4-8 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Santa Ana who trailed, 31-24, at intermission erased the seven-point deficit and took a 41-40 lead on Sonia Ruiz's layup with 11:00 minutes left in the game. The sophomore guard finished with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field including 2-of-2 from beyond the three-point arc.
The lead was short lived as Golden West regained the lead, 42-41, on the Rustlers' next possession when Evelyn Gomez scored two of her 11 points at the 10:41 mark. Gomez's layup sparked Golden West's late rally that Santa Ana was unable to overcome.
Tisha Gray scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Rustlers. Sophy Choy was also in double figures with 21 followed by Gomez's 11.
Ahkiah Hunter made 7-of-16 shots from the field and 7-of-11 free throws to lead Santa Ana with a game-high 21. Ruiz added 12 followed by Sol Pacheco who finished with seven points and a team-high six rebounds.
The Rustlers dominated the boards outrebounding the Dons, 43-26.
Next: Santa Ana will will host Irvine Valley College on Friday, January 14 in Orange Empire Conference women's basketball action at 7:30 p.m.
