SANTA ANA, CA - The #15 Santa Ana College (SAC) women's basketball team defeated #18 Cuesta College 65-56 at SAC in the first round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. With the win, the Dons advance and will play at #2 Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
Both teams started the game slowly and the game was tied at 6-6 five minutes into the game. Cuesta broke the tie to take an 8-6 lead at the 13:45 mark.
Cuesta slowly pulled away to a 17-11 lead before SAC battled back to tie the game at 18-18 on a three-pointer by Jamie Glover (Villa Park HS) with 6:30 left in the half. The Dons appeared to be taking a three-point lead into half time before Cuesta's Tiffany Mobley beat the buzzer with a three-point basket to tie the game at 30-30.
SAC opened the second half of the game stronger than the first half and quickly jumped out to a 35-30 lead. Linda Lomeli (Saddleback HS) scored the first two points of the half and the Dons never gave the lead back. SAC held a lead as large as 10 points in the second half before going on to win 65-56.
Heather Couzens (Pacifica HS) led the Dons with 21 points and 18 rebounds followed Glover who scored 12 points and has four assists. Mariella McElroy (Saddleback HS) and Caitlyn Holley (Aliso Niguel HS) each scored 10 points in the victory.
