Dons Defeat Orange Coast for First Conference Win
SANTA ANA, CA -The Santa Ana College (SAC) softball team defeated visiting Orange Coast College (OCC) 5-3 in an Orange Empire Conference game. The win improves the Dons to 4-5-1 overall and 1-3 in conference while OCC falls to 3-6 and 0-5.
Katrina Gaar led the game off for the Pirates with an infield single later scored the first run of the game on a RBI-single by Candice Arevalo to put OCC up 1-0 early.
The Dons struggled offensively early before Shannon Halverson hit a one-out single to left field in the fourth inning. After a fly out, Daiseree Williams blasted a two-run home run over the centerfield wall to give the Dons a 2-1 lead.
The Pirates answered in the top of the fifth when Kristin Bassler started the inning with a walk. She later reached third when Kayse Potter made it to second on Dons fielding error.
After Nicole Silva flew out to center field Nicole Mendoza's throw from center field went over Shannon Halverson's head at home allowing Bassler to score and Potter to advance to third.
Halverson's attempt to pick off Bassler at home sailed over Alicia Remigio's head, allowing Potter to score. The Pirates were able to retake the lead without a single hit as they were aided by three Dons errors.
Cheyenne Ryan's one-out single in the bottom half of the fifth helped spark the Dons rally after losing the lead. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Katlyn Harp and scored on Bre Dravis' double to tie the game at 3-3.
After Mendoza reached on an error and Dravis moved to third, Halverson hit a popup in the middle of the infield that wasn't fielded allowing Dravis to score from third to give the Dons a 4-3 lead.
After a scoreless sixth inning for OCC, Williams led the bottom of the sixth off with an infield single. Amanda Patrick followed with another single but was out on a double play in the next at-bat. With two outs, Ryan singled to centerfield scoring Jessica Felix who ran for Williams to put SAC up 5-3.
Katlyn Harp came in to pitch the seventh inning. After allowing back-to-back singles she got the Pirates to pop the ball up three straight times to end the game.
Harp earned her first save of the season in relief of Remigio who picked up her first win of the season. Remigio pitched six innings allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits with six strikeouts.
