Dons Late Rally Falls Short in 4-1 Loss to Riverside

SANTA ANA, CA -The Santa Ana College (SAC) softball team lost to visiting Riverside College 4-1 in a game that took two days to play due to a rain out on February 13.

Riverside (11-3, 4-0) held a 2-0 lead after scoring twice in the second inning on February 13. Christin Dunn led the inning off by reaching on an error and scored in the next at-bat, a double by Audriana Gutierrez. Gutierrez scored on a single to centerfield.

The Tigers scored their third run 11 days later in the fifth inning when Jackie Serna walked and later scored when Gutierrez reached on an error. Riverside scored its final run in the sixth inning. Rikki Scates reached on a fielding error and later scored on a throwing error.

The Dons (3-5-1, 0-3), who were unable to get a hit until the sixth inning, turned their first hit into a run. Cheyenne Ryan hit a single through the left side scored three batters later on a single by Nicole Mendoza.

All runners were originally safe but Mendoza was picked off at first after Ryan scored. Shannon Halverson, who reached on an error, attempted to score on the play but was thrown out for the second out.

With two outs in the seventh inning, Amanda Patrick attempted to stretch a double into a triple to give the Dons an extended rally but was thrown out to end the game.

Katlyn Harp suffered the loss, pitching the entire game. She allowed four runs, only one earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
