Santa Ana Unable to Hold Lead; Lose to Ventura 6-3

SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) softball team lost its season opener 6-3 to visiting Ventura College despite leading the game 3-0. Ventura won the game with back-to-back three-run innings to pick up the opening day win.

Nicole Mendoza led the game off for the Dons with a single through the left side. She later stole second base and reached third on a wild pitch. Alicia Remigio, who walked in her at-bat advanced to second on the same wild pitch. With two outs, Daiseree Williams doubled to left field, scoring Mendoza and Remigio to give SAC the early 2-0 lead.

Ventura threatened in the top of the second inning with two runners on and one out. Cyanna Navarro hit a single to centerfield and Tawnya Jones attempted to score from second but was thrown out at home by Mendoza.

The Dons scored their third run in the third inning. Mendoza again led the inning off with a single through the right side and later stole second. She advanced to third on a Cheyenne Ryan ground out and scored on a single by Remigio.

Ventura rallied to the tie the game in the fifth inning at 3-3 with two runs being scored on a fielding error and the third on a wild pitch. The Pirates scored the three runs on three hits and one error.

Shelbi Stallings led the top of the sixth inning off for Ventura with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. She advanced to third on a bunt single and scored the game-winning run on a single to centerfield. Ventura added two more runs to take a commanding 6-3 lead.

Ryan hit a two-out single in the sixth inning but the Dons were unable to mount a rally as they lost 6-3. Katlyn Harp started the game at pitcher for SAC and allowed three runs on five hits in five innings, she left the game after the fifth with a no decision.

Alicia Remigio suffered the loss for the Dons allowing three runs on two hits in two innings. Both Dons pitchers allowed only one earned run apiece.
