Dons Fall Short in 11-10 Loss to Golden West in 10
SANTA ANA , CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) softball team lost to visiting Golden West College (GWC) 11-10 in 10 innings. The loss came in the Dons (22-20, 8-12) final home game of the season.
SAC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Natalie DeLeese (El Toro HS) reached on a fielding error and later scored on a single by Jenny Kulp (El Modena HS).
The Rustlers (21-20, 8-12) came back to tie the game in the second inning at 1-1 and later jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third. They added one more run in the fourth to go ahead 5-1.
Kulp led the bottom half of the fourth inning off with a double to right-centerfield. Vivian Torres (Perris HS) hit a fly ball to centerfield, allowing Kulp to advance to third. Two batters later, Loren Harrell (Tustin HS) hit a RBI-single to right field that scored Kulp.
Stacin Halverson (Western HS) followed with a single up the middle and Rachel Blake (Villa Park HS) singled to left to load the bases. DeLeese then hit a bases clearing double to tie the game at 5-5.
GWC took a temporary 6-5 lead in the top half of the fifth inning. The Dons came back in the bottom half of the inning to claim a 7-6 lead. Parr led off with a single and Kulp reached on an error. Torres executed a sacrifice bunt to perfection that advanced the runners. Rachale Gamson (Kaiser HS) tied the game with a single that scored Parr and Harrell hit a sacrifice fly that scored Kulp, giving SAC the 8-6 lead.
The Dons added one more run in the sixth inning on a double by Parr that scored Breanna Dravis (Villa Park HS). However, the Rustlers scored two runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 8-8 and force extra innings.
After GWC took an 11-8 lead in the 10th inning, the Dons attempted one last rally at home. After a lead-off out, Blake singled to left field followed by a pop-out. Down to their last out, Dravis reached on a fielder's choice and Blake beat the throw to keep the rally alive.
Parr doubled down the left line allowing Blake to score from second and cut the lead to 11-9 followed by an infield RBI-single by Kulp that scored Dravis. With Parr sitting on third base, Torres lined a hit to right field that seemed to tie the game but was thrown out at first base to end the game.
Harrell pitched the entire game for SAC and suffered the loss. She allowed 18 hits and 11 runs while striking out four.
