Santa Ana Holds on to Win Second Straight Game

SANTA ANA, CA – After a season-high four-game losing streak, Santa Ana College (SAC) has bounced back to win two straight games after defeating Saddleback College 4-3 today in an Orange Empire Conference softball game.

Saddleback struck first after Brooke Elkins hit a single to left center. A single and a wild pitch moved her to third base where she was able to score on a sacrifice fly by Emily Hillis to give the Gauchos a 1-0 lead.

The Dons tied the game in the bottom of the first inning when Tiffany Campos (Corona del Mar HS) hit an RBI ground out to second base scoring Heather Hamilton (Edison HS). Two fielding errors by the Gauchos allowed Hamilton to get into scoring position.

The Gauchos took the lead back in the top of the second inning when Kelli Larson hit a RBI ground out to first base allowing Lindsey Murray to score; Murray reached earlier on a double to center field.

SAC tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Cheyenne Ryan (El Modena HS) reached base on a walk and later scored on a Vivian Torres (Perris HS) single. The very next batter, Vanessa Hardway (Edison HS), hit a sacrifice bunt allowing Diana Quezada to score and give the Dons a 3-2 lead.

The Dons extended their lead in the sixth inning when Loren Harrell (Tustin HS) singled to right field and later scored on a throwing error putting the Dons up 4-3. Saddleback was able to close the gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Hillis singled in Larson but Mallory Marquez (Santa Ana HS) held the Gauchos from scoring again to pick up her second save of the season.

Ashly Perdue (La Mirada HS) picked up the win as she pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and three runs. She had six strikeouts and only two walks as she improved to 9-5 on the season.
