Head Coach, 28th year
Al Siddons, enters his 28th year as the head men's cross country and track & field coach at Santa Ana College. During his tenure at the college, Siddons has been honored as coach of the year 15 times. Most recently the coaching veteran was recognized by his peers in Fall 2004 when he was named the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
While at Santa Ana College, Siddons has coached many elite athletes at including Larry Hand, an 800 state champion (1:49.61) and 3:55 miler Jim Sorensen who set a school record of 14:50 in the 5,000 and was second in the 1500 at the 1996 Olympic trials. Siddons has also trained Marco Ochoa who is a former 10,000 school-record holder and was part of the 1997 USA team with a 2:13 marathon and finished fifth at the 2000 Olympic trials. Jose Herrera was the cross country state champion and set two new Santa Ana College school records in the 10,000 (29:55.90) and the 5,000 (14:45.82). In 2002, Matt McKeehan broke the Mt. SAC cross country course record with a time of 20:35 for four miles under Siddons guidance.
Last Fall (2004), Siddons coached Jersain Torres, the top freshman harrier in Santa Ana College history, to an 11th-place finish at the state cross country meet.
Most recently (Spring 2005), former Don led Isaac Perez to second-place finishes at the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) Track & Field Championships and the Southern California Regionals and a third-place finish at the state meet with a PR of 31:35 in the 10,000.
As an athlete, Siddons was a member of the Santa Ana College cross country team and lead the Dons to a Southern California Championship and a second place finish at the state meet. While at California State University, Fullerton with then head coach Ron Witchey, currently the throws coach at Santa Ana College, Siddons went on to be an NCAA finalist in the 3000 steeplechase. His team earned third at the NCAA Track and Field Meet as well as a National Championship and a third-place finish in cross country.
Siddons received both his bachelor's degree in History and his master's degree in kinesiology from California State University, Fullerton.
Aside from his coaching duties, he is a full-time professor in the Santa Ana College exercise science, health and athletics department.
Siddons, currently lives in Corona with his wife, Bev. They have been married 32 years and have two adult sons, Brent (California State University, Fullerton) and Brian (University of California at San Diego), who reside in Fullerton and San Diego, respectively. |
