Carter Wins High Jump; Earns Spot On Team USA
COLLEGE STATION, TX - Freshman Matt Carter (El Modena HS) captured the high jump title at the 2004 USA Junior Track & Field Championships at Anderson track and field on the campus of Texas A&M University and in the process earned a spot on Team USA. The Santa Ana College high jump specialist cleared 7'-1/2" to better Buford Williams and Ed Wright by more than two inches to claim the title.
It was the second time in less than two months that Carter has cleared seven feet in the high jump. He first accomplished the feat on May 8 when he won the California Community College Southern California Community College Track & Field Championships with a leap of 7'-0." In doing so, Carter became just the third person in SAC track & field history to clear seven feet in the high jump. Only his current jumps coach and SAC Athletic Hall of Famer Ed Caruthers has jumped higher having cleared 7'-1 1/2" in 1965. Caruthers was a two-time Olympic qualifier placing eighth in 1964 (as a freshman at SAC) and third in 1968.
By winning the high jump title at the 2004 USA Junior Track & Field Championships, Carter will represent Team USA at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Junior Championships, July 13-18, in Grosseto, Italy.
The 18-year-old, El Modena High School-product is one of just four Southern California athletes who will be competing in the IAAF World Junior Championships next month. Joining him in Italy will be Allyson Felix (200m, Los Angeles), Gayle Hunter (Heptathlon, Riverside), David Torrence (1500m, Tarzana).
