SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) men's soccer team opened it's 2009 season with a 2-1 victory over Rio Hondo College.
Julian Cardenas put the Dons up 1-0 in the final seconds of the first half when he buried a shot from the right side past Rio Hondo's (2-1) keeper. Alberto Alvarado set Cardenas up with the assist.
The Road Runners came back to tie the game in the 54th minute. With the Dons defense backed up on a corner kick, Jonathan Ramirez kicked the ball short setting up Christian Soto for the goal.
With the clock winding down the Dons offense surged towards the goal and managed a shot that got blocked. Adrian Negrete was the first to get to the free ball and fired a shot that found the back of the net, giving the Dons the 2-1 victory.
Adrian Garcia made eight saves for the Dons while allowing one goal in the win. Luis Godinez turned away seven shots for the Road Runners but allowed the two goals in the loss.
