Coleman's Late Bucket Caps Dons Second Half Rally
SANTA ANA, CA - After trailing by 16 points at the half, the Santa Ana College (SAC) men's basketball team rallied to defeat Cuyamaca College 62-59 in a non-conference game.
The win moves the Dons to 2-2 on the season with both wins coming against the 1-6 Coyotes. In their first meeting, the Dons defeated Cuyamaca 72-58 in the College of the Canyons Tournament.
After Cuyamaca broke a 12-12 tie eight minutes into the game, the Coyotes went on to build a 38-22 halftime lead behind 55% shooting from the floor and 54% shooting from behind the three-point line.
But that hot shooting cooled down in the second half to just 33% as the Dons started to chip away at the Coyotes lead. Finally, with 1:50 left in the game, the Dons forced the sixth tie of the game at 57-57 on a Kevin Ramirez lay-up.
Cuyamaca reclaimed the lead at 59-57 with 1:30 left before the two teams traded missed baskets. Ashton Coleman grabbed the rebound on Cuyamaca's missed shot and went the length of the floor, scoring to tie the game at 59-59 while also being fouled with 31 seconds left.
After Coleman converted the free-throw, putting the Dons up 60-59, Cuyamaca seemed to be holding the ball for the final shot. However, Coleman came up with a steal and hit Chad Young for a fast-break layup to extend the Dons lead to 62-59.
The Coyotes had one final shot to tie the game, but Chioke Walker's three-point attempt from the right corner missed the mark, sealing the victory for the Dons.
Coleman finished the game as the Dons top-scorer with 13 points with Chase Miller adding 11 points. For the Coyotes, Walker led all scorers with 30 points but was the only Cuyamaca player in double digits.
