Santa Ana's Run Falls Short with 75-76 Loss
SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) men's basketball team had a chance to become the highest seeded team to make it to the state championship tournament. However, a foul in the final second allowed Antelope Valley College (AVC) to make two free throws and take a one-point lead to win the game 75-76.
The Dons fell behind by 11 points at half time but stormed back to tie the game late. After a SAC free throw with less then ten seconds left put the Dons up 75-74, Antelope Valley stormed down the court and got a final shot off that initially appeared to be blocked. After the whistles blew and the horn sounded for the end of the game the officials came out and called a foul on SAC putting AVC on the line.
Both free throws were made and the Dons bid to the state tournament fell short. AVC finished the game 21-for-27 from the free throw line while the Dons only managed 11-for-21.
John Staats led the Dons in scoring with 22 points as he hit six three pointers in the game. Tyre Thompson added another 19 points in the loss and Michael Hernandez scored 11 points. |
