SAC Upsets #1 Bakersfield in Second Round
SANTA ANA, CA - As the lowest seeded team remaining in the Southern California Regional Playoffs, Santa Ana College (SAC) upset top seed Bakersfield College (BC) 92-91. The victory improves the Dons' record to 25-8 and allows them to advance to the final round of the Regional Playoffs.
The Dons jumped out to an early 9-1 lead in the first five minutes of the game and continued to hold the lead until BC tied the game at 17-17 with lees than 10 minutes remaining in the half. After a Tyre Thompson free throw tied the game at 19-19 the Dons scored six straight points to take a 25-19 lead.
BC was able to tie the game three times in the remaining seven and a half minutes but was unable to take the lead. After the last tie at 43-43, SAC outscored the Renegades 8-5 to take a 51-48 lead at the half.
The Dons held the lead for the first six minutes of the second half before BC tied the game at 61-61. The two teams traded the lead for the next three minutes before BC took the lead at 71-70. BC extended its lead to 10 points in the next three minutes and held an 81-71 lead with seven and a half minutes left in the game.
SAC cut the lead to two with just under two minutes remaining and tied the game at 88-88 at the 1:07 mark on a Thompson lay-up. Rod Harmon hit two free throws with 51 seconds left to give the Dons a 90-88 lead. A BC free throw with 30 seconds left cut the lead to 90-89. Mike Hernandez made a lay-up with 14 second remaining to put the Dons up 92-89. The Renegades scored with 1.6 seconds left to pull within one but were unable to get another shot off as the Dons won 92-91.
Harmon led the Dons in scoring with 21 points with Hernandez and Thompson adding 17 points apiece. Johns Staats and James Silvie each scored 12 points and D'Andre Denan scored 11 points.
