Santa Ana Defeats Cuyamaca in First Round
SANTA ANA, CA - In the third meeting of the season between Santa Ana College (SAC) and Cuyamaca College, SAC split the season series with an 85-68 victory in the first round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
The first half started with the teams trading the lead back and forth. With just over nine minutes left the game was tied at 20-20 before the Dons went on an 11-2 run capped off by a James Silvie (Mayfair HS) jump shot that put the Dons up 31-22. SAC ended the first half with a 43-34 lead; D'Andre Denan led the Dons' scorers with 10 first half points.
In the early minutes of the second half Cuyamaca took advantage of their size down low but failed to cut into the Dons' lead. Cuyamaca was able to get within eight points early in the second half before the Dons took control of the game and went on to pick up the victory.
The Dons' victory advances them in the playoffs sending them to play top seed Bakersfield. Denan led the Dons in scoring with 19 points in the game while Rod Harmon added another 16 points. Mike Hernandez scored 12 points with four assists. James Silvie and Sean Luecke each scored 10 points for the Dons in the win.
