Santa Ana's Win Streak Snapped
SANTA ANA, CA - Santa Ana College (SAC) entered tonight's game against Saddleback College riding a 10 game winning streak but was unable to keep the streak alive losing to the Gauchos 79-76. The loss drops the Dons' record to 17-4 and 1-1 in conference while Saddleback improves to 16-5 and remains perfect in conference play with a 3-0 record.
The Dons got off to a slow start and managed to score only seven points in the first nine minutes of the game falling behind 12-7. SAC was able to cut the Gauchos lead to 15-13 until Saddleback scored nine straight points to extend their lead to 24-13.
SAC battled back once again cutting the Gaucho lead to only three by half time. The teams exchanged the lead during the first 10 minutes of the second half before the Dons took a 62-55 lead with just over nine minutes left. The Dons were able to hold onto the lead for several minutes but Saddleback fought back and tied the game at 70-70 with three minutes left.
With less than a second left on the clock and the game tied at 75-75 the Dons were called for a holding foul sending Lamont Morgan to the free throw line where he hit both free throws to give Saddleback a 77-75 lead. On the ensuing play SAC's Mike Hernandez (Whittier HS) was fouled before the ball was put into play giving the Dons once last chance. Hernandez was only able to hit one of the two free throws and SAC was called for a technical foul giving the Gauchos two more free throws and sealing the 79-76 victory.
Tyre Thompson (Centennial HS) led all scorers with 21 points and Rod Harmon (Villa Park HS) added another 18 points. SAC shot only 39% from the field while Saddleback was able to hit 50% of its shots.
