Santa Ana Drops OEC-Opener To Irvine Valley
SANTA ANA, CA - Ceylon Elgin-Taylor made one of two free throws with 27 seconds remaining to break a 61-61 tie and put visiting Irvine Valley College ahead for good as the 15th-ranked Lasers (14-9, 2-0) spoiled Santa Ana College's Orange Empire Conference (OEC) opener, 63-61. The Dons (9-11, 0-1) had a chance to take the lead but Terrence Hundley's jumper with four seconds remaining was off the mark.
Tyler Gottstein, who tied Elgin Taylor with a team-high 15 points, grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 0.7 seconds left. Gottstein made one of his two free throws to make the final 63-61.
Santa Ana's Sean Luecke scored a game-high 16 in the loss 10 of which came at the free throw line. The freshman forward was 3 of 6 from the field and 10 of 14 at the line. Terrence Hundley added 15 for the Dons followed by Chris Childress who finished with 12 points and a team-high 7 rebounds.
The Dons took a five-point halftime lead, 29-24, on Thomas Christian's three-pointer at the buzzer and led by as many as 11, 35-24, early in the second half but let it slip away.
The game featured 14 lead changes, 17 ties, 47 fouls and 65 free throw attempts. The Dons were 21 of 30 (70 percent) from the free throw line while the Lasers were 22 of 35 (62. 9 percent).
