Santa Ana Opens Season with a Victory over Citrus

SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) football team opened the 2008 season with a 28-20 victory over the visiting Citrus College Fighting Owls at the Santa Ana Stadium. The victory opens the Dons' season with a 1-0 victory while Citrus falls to 0-1.

SAC opened the scoring on a six-yard touchdown pass from Michael Coulter (El Dorado HS) to Everett Reid (Foothill HS) halfway through the first quarter. Citrus came back to tie the game at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter when Kyle Galindo blocked a Dons' punt in the end zone and recovered it for the touchdown.

SAC answered with five minutes remaining in the second quarter when Coulter threw his second touchdown pass of the game, this time connecting with Matt Cardenas (El Dorado HS) for a 10-yard touchdown. Just four minutes later the Dons scored again as Coulter hit a streaking Luster Lewis (Tustin HS) down the sideline for a 66-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was blocked and SAC went up 20-7.

Citrus threatened to score late in the first half from the one-yard line but SAC's defense kept the Owls out of the end zone. Aaron Martinez (Esperanza HS) and Jason McCalope (Santa Ana HS) each made touchdown saving tackles.

The Dons extended their lead to 28-7 with one minute remaining in the third quarter as Coulter stood in the pocket and delivered a 32-yard touchdown strike to Phillip Van Holland (El Dorado HS).

Citrus capitalized on a handful of mistakes by the Dons' late in the fourth quarter to cut the lead. Raymond Johnson scored a 34-yard fumble recovery to cut the lead to 28-14 followed by a 13-yard touchdown pass from David Potts to Rashon Morris after the Dons fumbled the snap on a punt attempt.

Citrus made one final push in the final minute but the Dons' defense held strong to preserve the 28-20 victory.

Coulter led the team with four touchdown passes and a two-point conversion to Cardenas . He finished the game 13-for-30 for 184 yards. The Dons were led in rushing by Bryson Kelly (Kamiak HS) who gained 55 yards on 16 carries.
