Dons Fall to Orange Coast 33-27 in Triple Overtime
COSTA MESA, CA - For the second week in a row, the Santa Ana College football team lost despite holding a fourth quarter lead following the Dons 33-27 loss to Orange Coast College in triple overtime.
The Pirates (5-1, 1-1) scored immediately when Lano Fuentes returned the opening kickoff 94-yards putting OCC up 7-0. The Dons (3-3, 0-2) cut the lead halfway through the first quarter to 7-3 on a 38-yard field goal by Chase Lansford.
Devin DeLeon scored the only points of the second quarter on a 49-yard touchdown run as the Dons took a 10-7 lead into the half.
Travis Toon connected with Dominique Williams on fourth down for a 34-yard pass and catch touchdown to open the scoring in the second half putting the Dons back up by a score of 17-7.
The Pirates came back late in the third quarter to cut the lead to 17-14 on a Ray Holley one-yard touchdown rush. The score capped off the Pirates seven-play, 48-yard drive that took 3:50 off the clock.
With the Dons holding a 17-14 lead, the only points of the fourth quarter came off the foot of Lucas Vandeman when he hit a 28-yard field goal to tie the game at 17-17 sending the game to overtime.
Holley scored for the Pirates in the first overtime on a two-yard touchdown run. He was matched by Julius Macharia who caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Thomas sending the game to a second overtime.
After the Pirates stopped the Dons offense on three plays, Lansford hit his second field goal of the game, this time from 50 yards out. The Dons held Coast on three plays forcing a 37-yard field goal by Vandeman sending the game to a third overtime.
Holley scored his third touchdown of the game, second of overtime to start the third overtime giving the Pirates defense a chance to end the game.
Needing a touchdown the Dons were held on their first three plays of the third overtime. On fourth down, Jimmy Keating intercepted Thomas' pass sealing the win for the Pirates.
