Dons Open Season with Impressive Win at Citrus
SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) football team opened the 2009 season with a 38-7 victory at Citrus College on Saturday. The Dons scored on half of their drives including four touchdowns on their first six possessions.
Ryan Handford opened the game with a 46-yard kickoff return to the Owls 40-yard line setting up the Dons first touchdown drive. Just five plays later, Eric Pesante ran in from eight-yards out to give SAC the early 7-0 lead.
Quarterback Jordan Thomas hit Parker Roberts for an 11-yard touchdown pass later in the first quarter to extend the Dons lead to 14-0 and Pesante found the end zone for a second time in the first quarter, this time from one-yard out to put SAC up 21-0 after one.
The Dons added their fourth touchdown in the second quarter when Thomas threw his second touchdown pass to Roberts, this time from 31-yards out. Linebacker Blake Poole had a key 26-yard reception on a fake punt to keep the drive alive.
The Fighting Owls offense put together its first productive drive of the game capped off by a 26-yard touchdown pass from Byron Ingram to Tyra Waits to cut the Dons lead to 28-7.
Prior to the Owls nine-play, 73-yard drive, Citrus had been held to just eight yards on 13 plays including three, three-and-outs and one fumble. The Owls lone first down in their first five drives came on a Dons penalty.
SAC's final two scores were a three-yard touchdown pass from Thomas to Martin Anthony in the third quarter and a 33-yard field goal by Chase Lansford.
The Dons were led by Thomas who finished the game 18-of-28 with 225 yards passing and three touchdowns. Thomas' main target was Parker Roberts who finished with 64 yards on five catches and two touchdowns.
SAC's rushing attack combined for 179 yards on 51 carries. Rap Dantic was the leading rusher with 40 yards on 11 carries while Jaron Hytche carried the ball for 38 yards. Johnny Privitelli chipped in with 31 yards on six carries and Pesante had 25 yards on six carries with two touchdowns.
Defensively, the Dons were led by Blake Poole who had eight tackles. Poole also chipped in offensively with two receptions on fourth down for 57 yards. Aaron Martinez followed Poole with seven tackles and Va Mataia had five tackles and one sack.
