SAC Opens Conference Play with Win over Cerritos
SANTA ANA , CA – The Santa Ana College (SAC) football team defeated visiting Cerritos College 23-17 in the Mission Conference National Division opener at Santa Ana Stadium. The victory extends the Dons' winning streak to three games and improves their overall record to 3-3 and 1-0 in conference. The loss drops the Falcons to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
SAC fell behind early giving up a 23-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 14-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to trail 10-0. However, two minutes after the Falcon touchdown, Mark Iddins (Kamiak HS) connected with Matt Cardenas (El Dorado HS) for a 34-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 10-7.
SAC took the lead with 30 seconds remaining in the first half when Iddins threw his second touchdown pass of the game, this time to R.J. Koch (Pacifica HS) for a six-yard score to put the Dons up 14-10 at the half.
Bryson Kelly (Kamiak HS) scored early in the third quarter on a two-yard rush; the extra-point was missed putting SAC up 20-10. Nick Canney (Canyon HS) hit a 24-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to make the score 23-10.
Cerritos cut the lead to 23-17 less than two minutes later on a 36-yard touchdown pass but were unable to score again. The Dons' defense sacked AJ Toscano three times in the Falcons final drive to seal the game, BJ Bell had two of the sacks.
Kelly led the Dons in rushing with 64 yards on 15 carries while Iddins finished the game with 254 yards on 20-for-35 passing with two touchdowns and one interception. Koch caught eight passes for 70 yards and a touchdown and Cardenas caught four passes for 96 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, the Dons were led by Bell who had five tackles, three sacks and a fumble recovery. Al Vargas and Armando Contreras each had seven tackles and Andrew Avina had five tackles with one sack and a forced fumble.
