SANTA ANA, CA – It took four quarters plus four overtimes to decide a winner between Santa Ana College (SAC) and Cerritos College with SAC coming out on top 47-41 to stop its three-game losing streak and give the Dons a chance at a bowl game.
The Dons struck early when Kasey Peters (Newport Beach HS) hit David Richmond (Garden Grove HS) for a 39-yard touchdown pass less than two minutes into the game to put SAC up 6-0. The Falcons took the lead at the very end of the first quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Chad Manis to Jerrad Nutt.
Brian Allen (Fullerton HS) gave the Dons the lead in the second quarter on a nine-yard touchdown run and Rory Schoonmaker (Huntington Beach HS) passed to Everett Reid (Foothill HS) for the two-point conversion, giving the Dons a 14-7 lead at half time.
Cerritos tied the game in the third quarter at 14-14 and later took a 21-14 lead until Peters threw his second touchdown pass of the game, this one to R.J. Koch (Pacifica HS) to tie the game at 21-21.
SAC had the ball first in overtime and Peters hit Richmond for a six-yard touchdown to put the Dons up in the first overtime. Cerritos came right back on its possession and scored, sending the game into a second overtime.
Cerritos scored on the first possession of the second overtime putting the pressure on the Dons to tie the game. Peters connected with Reid for a 25-yard touchdown sending the game into a third overtime period.
Allen scored for the Dons on their possession but they were unable to convert the two-point conversion putting them up 41-35. Cerritos also scored and was also unable to convert its two-point conversion sending the game into a fourth overtime.
Cerritos had first possession in the fourth overtime and Nate Mitani (Edison HS) intercepted the Falcons' pass on the first play setting up SAC's chance at winning the game. The Dons drove the ball down to the two-yard line where Allen scored his third touchdown of the game, this one sealing the victory for SAC.
Allen finished the game with 188 yards on 34 carries and had three touchdowns while Peters was 25-35 passing with 261 yards and four touchdowns. Richmond led the Dons' receivers with nine catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns. |
