Santa Ana Suffers First Loss of Season to El Camino

SANTA ANA, CA – Penalties and turnovers proved to be costly for Santa Ana College (SAC) as they lost 33-11 to visiting El Camino College (ECC) in the second week of Mission Conference football games.

On the Dons first possession, SAC was forced to punt and had the snap fly over punter Nate Mitani's (Edison HS) head and he eventually recovered the ball but was downed and the ball was turned over to ECC. Five plays later, the Warriors' Jamicah Bass scored a five-yard rushing touchdown to put ECC up 6-0.

SAC answered in the second quarter with a 25-yard field goal by Dominik Bronowicki (Edison HS) that pulled the Dons within three points. Later in the quarter, the Warriors extended their lead with a 10 play, 60 yard drive that was capped off by a 16-yard touchdown bass from Boo Jackson to Verran Tucker.

After another ECC score in the third quarter made the score 19-3, Kasey Peters (Newport HS) hit David Richmond (Garden Grove HS) for a 78-yard touchdown. Rory Schoonmaker (Huntington Beach HS) hit Everett Reid (Foothill HS) for the two-point conversion, making the score 19-11. SAC later forced the Warriors to punt but unfortunately fumbled the punt on the six-yard line setting up the next ECC score.

The Dons made one more attempt towards the end of the game but were turned away when ECC intercepted Peters for the second time of the game and later scored on their next possession to seal the victory at 33-11. Peters finished the game 21 of 36 passing with 227 yards. He threw one touchdown and two interceptions.

Brian Allen (Fullerton HS) had a quiet game with only 90 yards rushing on 17 carries. Richmond led the Dons in receiving with seven catches for 133 yards. Mikell Mair (Tustin HS) had another big game defensively for the Dons with four solo tackles and eight assists. Armando Contreras (Mater Dei HS) recorded five tackles and five assists while Mitani had four with three assists.
