Santa Ana Remains Perfect with Win over Palomar

ESCONDIDO, CA – Santa Ana College (SAC) remains undefeated with a 41-35 victory over Mission Conference foe Palomar College (PAL). The loss dropped the Comets' record to 2-2 for the season.

The Dons scored first less than two minutes into the game when Leslie Bonsu returned the Comets' punt 87 yards for a touchdown, however the Dons had the extra point blocked making the score 6-0.

PAL answered with a 12 play, 80-yard drive that capped off by a seven-yard pass from Tyler Lorenzen to Tyler Fenton putting the Comets up 7-6. SAC was able to take the lead back in the second quarter when Kasey Peters (Newport Beach HS) hit DeAndre Williams (Long Beach Poly HS) for a five-yard touchdown pass; the Dons another extra point blocked leaving the score at 12-7.

After another touchdown pass by the Comets, Peters threw his second touchdown pass, this time to Everett Reid (Foothill HS) for 28-yards on fourth down. Peters hit David Richmond (Garden Grove HS) for the two-point conversion giving the Dons a 20-14 lead.

The Comets took the lead back at 21-20 on a four-yard touchdown run by J.D. Kodakek with just over four minutes left in the first half. The Comets couldn't hold the lead when Peters found Reid again with just ten seconds left for a four-yard touchdown pass. Reid finished the game with three catches for 54 yards and two touchdowns. Peters completed another two-point conversion to Richmond to put SAC up 28-21 at halftime.

The Dons got the ball back to start the third quarter and it took the offense less than three minutes to extend the lead. Peters hit Williams from 17-yards out making the score 35-21 Dons which would last through the third quarter.

Running back Brian Allen (Fullerton HS) finally found the end zone ten minutes into the fourth quarter when he scored from the one-yard line, seemingly putting the game away. However, SAC's kicking woes continued as another extra point was missed.

The Comets answered quickly with a 61-yard pass to the five-yard line set up a one-yard touchdown just two plays later by J.D. Kodakek. On PAL's next possession, Lorenzen hit Marques Parker for a 69-yard touchdown, pulling the Comets within six-points at 41-35.

R.J. Koch (Pacifica HS) recovered the on-side kick for the Dons, the second of the game that he recovered, giving SAC a chance to run out the clock. PAL was able to force the Dons into a fourth and one with 33 seconds left. SAC decided to go for it and Allen picked up three yards to seal the game for the Dons. Allen, who came into the game leading the state in rushing, ran for a season-high 181 yards on 37 carries.

Peters finished the game with 268 yards on 20-for-32 passing with four touchdowns while Williams led the Dons in receiving with four catches for 70 yards.
