SANTA ANA , CA – Santa Ana College (SAC) scored early and often against Fullerton College Saturday, September 16, at Fullerton Union High School, preserving the Dons' undefeated record and snapping a five-game losing streak against the Hornets.
Sophomore quarterback Kasey Peters (Newport Beach HS) hit sophomore wide receiver DeAndre Williams (Long Beach Poly HS) on the second play of the game for a 56-yard touchdown, putting the Dons up early, 7-0.
The Hornets answered on their first possession on a one-yard touchdown run by Joe Chatman, tying the game at 7-7. SAC answered less than three minutes later when Peters again hit Williams for another touchdown, this time from 29-yards out.
The Hornets came right back and returned the ensuing kickoff 92-yards to again tie the game at 14-14. SAC capped off the first quarter scoring frenzy when Peters hit freshman running back Chris Washington (Saddleback HS) for an eight-yard touchdown reception.
The Dons continued the high scoring pace early in the second quarter when sophomore running back Brian Allen (Fullerton HS) scored on a four-yard touchdown run in the same stadium he played high school football. Saturday's game marked the third straight game that Allen rushed for over 100-yards, picking up 170 yards on 34 carries.
Fullerton cut the lead to 28-20 with less than five minutes left in the first half; however, this is the closest the Hornets would get for the remainder of the game.
Peters threw his fourth touchdown pass of the first half with two and a half minutes left in the first half when he hit sophomore wide receiver David Richmond (Garden Grove HS) for a 23-yard touchdown pass.
The two hooked up again in the third quarter, this time for 24-yards, extending the Dons' lead to 42-20. The touchdown pass was Peters fifth of the game, tying a Santa Ana College record for most touchdown passes in a single game. He finished the game 14-for-32 passing with 280 yards.
Richmond finished the game with seven catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns. His receiving partner, Williams, pulled in four catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns of his own. After a 28-yard field goal by SAC's Dominik Bronowicki (Edison HS), the Hornets added two late touchdowns to pull the final score to 45-35.
The victory improved the Dons' overall record to 3-0 while the Hornets dropped to 1-2. The overall series record still favors SAC at 41-39-4 and the "Key to the County" returns to Santa Ana College after five years. The "Key to the County" is a large iron key with both schools colors on each side of the key. Every SAC victory is written on the red side, while the Fullerton victories are written on the yellow side. The two teams have now met 84 times since 1916. |
