Santa Ana Opens Season with a Victory over Compton
SANTA ANA , CA – Santa Ana College (SAC) used a balanced attack Friday night when they defeated Compton College (0-1) 28-10 at Eddie West Field, picking up the victory in the first game of the season. The Dons were able to effectively run the ball throughout the game and picked up a number of timely receptions.
After Compton forced a SAC punt in the opening drive of the game, Armando Contreras (Mater Dei HS) picked off a Kyle Parrish pass on the Santa Ana eight yard line, stopping the Tartars' threat. On the very next play Brian Allen picked up a 50-yard run for the Dons, taking the offense to the Compton 17. Three plays later, Allen capped the drive off with a four-yard touchdown run. Allen ended the game with 109 yards on 18 carries for the Dons.
Compton answered with a four minute drive that led to a 47-yard field goal by Andrew Aguila. After being forced to punt on their next possession, SAC was able to stop Compton at their 35-yard line setting up the next offensive play. SAC sophomore quarterback Kasey Peters ( Newport Beach ) connected with sophomore David Richmond ( Garden Grove ) for a one play, 51-yard scoring drive, extending the Dons' lead to 14-3 in the second quarter.
The score remained 14-3 going into half time and SAC was able to hold the Tartars to a four and out to start the second half. SAC scored six plays later as Peters picked up his second touchdown pass of the night, hitting sophomore DeAndre Williams (Long Beach Poly) for an eight yard touchdown reception.
Compton scored next on a 10-yard run by Derrick Driscoll, pulling the Tartars within 11 points of the Dons. However, Compton would not be able to score again as the Dons' defense held them in check for the rest of the game.
SAC scored the last points of the game with just over five minutes to play when Peters and Richmond connected for their second touchdown combination. This time Richmond was able to score from 22-yards out as he pulled the ball in just feet from the sidelines. Richmond finished the game with four catches for 98 yards with Peters going 12-for-25 with 194 passing yards.
The Dons had 313 total yards in the victory on 54 plays, while the defense held Compton to 235 yards on 61 plays and only 64 rushing yards. They also managed two interceptions in the victory, while Compton wasn't able to force a single turnover. |
