SANTA ANA, CA - Ninth-ranked Santa Ana College (3-1) snapped a three-game losing streak to Palomar College (3-1) and shut out the fourth-ranked Comets for the first time in school history with a 38-0 win at Santa Ana Stadium/Eddie West Field, Saturday. Palomar entered the game having won the three previous three meetings between the two teams by an average score of 43-9.
The Dons, who were coming off a disappointing 31-24 loss to rival-Fullerton College a week ago, used a balanced attack to dominate the Comets. Santa Ana rolled up 488 yards of total offense behind sophomore quarterback Daniel Morales (La Habra HS) who completed 14 of 25 for 245 yards and two touchdowns and a stable of running backs who combined for 237 yards on 49 attempts.
Trent Sakioka (La Habra HS) was Morales' main target as the sophomore receiver hauled finished with a team-high four catches for 96 yards. Finas Rabb (El Modena HS) and Jamin Shepard (La Habra HS) each caught three passes for 43 and 35 yards, respectively. Rabb gave the Dons a 31-0 halftime led with this third touchdown catch of the year, a 17-yard with 4:04 left in the second quarter.
For the second straight game freshman Devonte Merrifield (Western HS), led all rushers with 97 yards and two touchdowns. Merrifield had scoring runs of 22 and 23 yards for Santa Ana . Kaleo Igarta (La Habra HS) rushed 11 times for 75 and a score of his own in the Dons lop-sided win.
The Dons limited the Comets to just 244 yards of total offense, 45 of which came on Josh Somerville's pass completion to Joe Markum at the Santa Ana 12-yardline with 18 second left in the contest.
Donny Spreeman (Edison HS) was in on a game-high six tackles for the Dons including one tackle for loss. Gabe Rojo (Loara HS) and Nate Mitani (Edison HS) each record a share of five tackles while Kyle Lancaster (Redondo Union HS) was in on four stops including his Mission Conference-leading seventh sack.
Somerville led the Comets' offensive attack passing for 181 yards completing 21 of 37. He also rushed 10 times for 18 yards. Isaiah Crawford led Palomar in rushing with 30 yards on 10 attempts.
Tyler Fenton had a game-high eight catches for 59 yards for the Comets.
