SANTA ANA, CA - Santa Ana kicker Curtis Gladden, Golden West wide receiver Gerald Fields and Saddleback strong safety Jack Meehan have been named Week 6 Mission Football Conference Players of the Week for their performances on the field.
Gladden (6-1, 170, So., PK/P, Pacifica HS) scored 17 of Santa Ana's 29 points and set a school record in the process with five field goals including a 25-yard, game-winner with five seconds remaining to be named Special Teams Player of the Week. His five field goals covered 25, 30, 38, 41 and a career-best 50 yards.
His 25-yard field goal with five second remaining gave fifth-ranked Santa Ana College a 29-27 win over Golden West College and spoiled the Rustlers' upset bid in the opening game of Mission Conference National Division action past Saturday. It was Gladden's fifth field goal of the day which set a new school record. He broke the previously mark of four held by John Talley (vs Los Angeles City, 1982) and Agustin Gonzales (vs Golden West, 2001).
Gladden also averaged 44.7 yards per punt on three attempts with one placed inside the Rustlers' 20.
Fields (WR, 6-0, 195, So., Valley (Kentucky) caught nine passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns in Golden West's close 29-27 loss to Santa Ana to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors. Fields 63-yard TD reception in the third quarter started Golden West's rally that came up short.
Meehan (SS, 6-0, 205, So, Santa Margarita HS) led the Gauchos with 13 tackles, including a sack for a 9-yard loss in Saddleback's 19-12 win over Cerritos to get the nod for Defensive Player of the Week. He also forced two fumbles.
