Mertins Named Southern California Pitcher of Year
SANTA ANA, CA - Kyle Mertins (El Dorado HS) can add one more award to his already impressive 2008 season after being named the 2008 Southern California All-American Pitcher of the Year. Mertins is the second pitcher from Santa Ana College in as many years to earn this honor following Daniel Fenwick who was named Pitcher of the Year last season.
Mertins was also named the Orange Empire Conference Pitcher of the Year following a 8-4 record with a 3.09 ERA. He had three complete games including a one-hit shutout against LA Harbor College in just his third start of the season.
Joining Mertins on the 2008 Southern California All-American Team are Kyle Hardman (Mission Viejo HS) and Derek Eligio (Esperanza HS). Eligio earned the honor after leading the Dons with a .405 batting average while starting all 50 games as a freshman. He hit 10 doubles and seven home runs with 39 RBIs.
Hardman was one of two utility players named to the list as he spent the season as a catcher, a first basemen and a designated hitter. He hit .337 with 17 doubles, nine home runs and a team high 59 RBIs.
The final honor given to the Dons was Crispin Tarango (Diamond Bar HS) being named to the 2008 All-Southern California Team. Tarango hit .328 while starting 49 games with 14 doubles and four home runs. |
