Dons to Host Ventura in Regional Playoffs as Top Seed
SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) baseball team received the number one seed in the south for the California Community College baseball playoffs and will host Ventura College this weekend. The Dons enter the playoffs as the number one seed for the second straight year.
The ranking follows SAC's 32-11 record this season and its second straight Orange Empire Conference Championship with a conference record of 17-4. The Dons had eight players selected to First and Second Team All-Orange Empire Conference including the Conference Pitcher of the Year (Kyle Mertins) and Conference Coach of the Year (Don Sneddon).
Ventura qualified for the playoffs as the #16 seed after finishing second in the Western State Conference, North Division behind #2 seed Cuesta College. Ventura (28-13, 17-8) defeated #17 Rio Hondo College 12-5 on Tuesday at Ventura College in the play-in game to advance to the regional playoffs this weekend.
The Dons lead five OEC teams in the seedings with Orange Coast College being named the three seed. Other OEC teams include #4 Irvine Valley College, #9 Cypress College and #10 Riverside College. The OEC leads the south with the most teams making the playoffs from one conference.
In the north, Fresno City College was named the number one seed with an overall record of 35-9. The Big 8 Conference leads the state with seven teams qualifying from the conference.
This weekend's games held at Santa Ana College will be played Friday at 3:00 p.m., Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and, if necessary, a third game will be played 30 minutes following the second game. Admission to the games is $8 for general admission and $5 for identified students, faculty, staff, senior citizens, and children under 12 years of
age.
