Santa Ana Avoids Elimination; Downs Cypress, 9-5
COSTA MESA, CA - Santa Ana College (33-10) scored runs in the first inning in route to a 9-5 win over Cypress College (26-15) in the loser's bracket finals of the California Community College Southern California Regional Baseball Tournament being played at Orange Coast College, Saturday. The win advanced the Dons into Sunday's championship game against host-Orange Coast College (28-15) edged Santa Ana, 8-7, in the winner's bracket semifinals earlier in the day.
Santa Ana must win two games on Sunday to reach the California Community College Commission On Athletics Baseball Championships that will be held at Fresno City College, May 28-30.
The Dons sent 11 batters to plate in the opening inning against the Chargers five of which collected hits. Mike Forman, who was 2 for 4 at the plate, delivered the key blow in the opening stanza with a bases-loaded double that gave the Dons a 4-0 lead. Catcher Wes Pascolla made it a 5-0 game with an RBI-double to right center while Jose Chavez capped the inning's scoring with a run-scoring single to center.
Chavez's hit chased Cypress starter Nick Rhodes (5-3) who suffered the loss.
Santa Ana added one run in the second inning when Pascolla, who was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI, singled home Rick Taloa to make it a 7-0 game.
The Chargers cut the Dons lead to just two, 7-5, with three runs in the second, one in the fifth and one in the sixth before Santa Ana scored two in the ninth on Taloa's two-out single to left to make the final 9-5.
Taloa, who was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI, was one of seven Dons to collect two or more hits. Jimmy Waninger and Chavez eached finished 3 for 5 at the plate while Taloa, Forman, Pascolla, Matt Morris (2 for 4) and Corey Skaggs
(2 for 6) each tallied two hits against the Chargers.
Paul Canedo improved to 7-2 with the win while Anthony Slama pitched one-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless relief to earn his team-leading seventh save. Canedo gave up five runs (three earned) on 10 hits and three walks while striking out three.
Orange Coast 8, Santa Ana 7
Orange Coast scored four runs in the seventh and one in the eight to take a 8-5 and held on as Santa Ana rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth before the Dons rally ended when pinch runner Brett Siegmund was thrown out at third base trying to go from first to third on Jimmy Waninger's two-run single to right to end the game.
Jose Chavez, who was 2 for 3, collected two of the Dons six hits.
Daniel Arizmendi (9-2) suffered the hard-luck loss giving up seven runs, only one of which was earned, on four hits and four walks while striking out four.
