Santa Ana Advances On Green's Error In 10th

COSTA MESA, CA - Garett Green's two-out fielding error on Corey Skaggs' groundball in the bottom of the 10th inning allowed pinch-runner Adam Riccardulli to score from third as third-seeded Santa Ana College (32-9) nipped sixth-seeded Cypress College (25-14), 6-5, in the first game of the California Community College Southern California Baseball Regional being played at Orange Coast College, Friday.

The Dons will face either second-seeded Orange Coast (27-15) who beat seventh-seeded Irvine Valley College (27-14), 6-5, in the winner's bracket semifinal game scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Designated hitter Tyler Greer set up the winning run when he led off the bottom the 10th with a double to left center off Cypress reliever Erik Chrichton (3-2) before being replaced by Riccardulli. After CJ Rice popped out to second for the Dons' first out, Jose Chavez gave Santa Ana runners on the corners with his single to shallow center. The game appeared to be heading to the 11th when Chrichton got Matt Morris to strike out swinging for the second out Greerand Skaggs to ground out to Green at second to end the inning, but Green's bobble allowed the winning run to score.

The Dons had a chance to win the game in regulation when they loaded the bases with no out, but failed to score.

Anthony Slama (3-3) picked up the win in one inning of relief of Santa Ana starter Garrett Rieck who pitched into the 10th. Rieck gave up all five of the Chargers runs on 13 hits and one error. He struck out one and walked none. Reick was pulled in the top of the 10th after giving up a leadoff double to Brandon Barnes. Slama retired the only three batters he faces when he got Jason Filarey and Green to groundout and Matt SlamaWallach to line out to Jose Chavez at short to end the Chargers' scoring threat.

The Dons, who overcame a 4-0 deficit, had six players collect two or more hits in the game led by Skaggs who was 3 for 6 at the plate. Orange Empire Conference (OEC) Co-Player of the Year Jacob Vasquez was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, a double and home run for the Dons. He also tied the game at 4-4 with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning. Matt Morris (2 for 6), Tyler Greer (2 for 5), CJ Rice (2 for 4) and Jose Chavez (2 for 5, 1 RBI) also had two hits apiece against the Chargers.

Taylor Green (3 for 5) and Matt Miller (3 for 4, 2 RBI) combined for six of the Chargers' 13 hits in the game while Green (2 for 4, 1 RBI) and Wallach (2 for 5, 1 RBI) each finished with two hits apiece.

Cypress starter David Huff, who earned a no-decision, gave up five runs on 10 hits and two walks over eight innings while striking out four.
