Reick, Santa Ana Win SoCal Regional Opener
SANTA ANA, CA - Santa Ana College's Garrett Rieck (8-1) gave up just one run and scattererd eight hits while striking out nine as fifth-seeded Santa Ana College (30-9) downed 12th-seeded Bakersfield College (23-16), 5-1, in California Community College Southern California Regional Baseball Playoff action, Saturday.
The Dons and Renegades will meet again on Sunday (May 15) at 11 a.m. in game two of the three-game series with the winner of the series advancing to one of two four-team super regionals next weekend at sites to be determined.
Santa Ana jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Matt Morris, who was 3 for 5 with an RBI, led off with an infield single, stole second and scored on Jacob Vasquez's run-scoring single to center.
The Renegades scored their only run off Rieck in the second inning when first baseman Ross Hoffman singled to center, stole second and scored on John Frost's single to center. Hoffman (2 for 4, 1 run scored) and Frost (2 for 3 1 RBI) collected two hits apiece and combined for four of Bakerfield's eight hits in the game.
Santa Ana took the lead for good in the third inning when the Dons scored three runs off of Renegades' starter Jacob Wild (6-5) who suffered the loss. Vasquez singled in Morris, who singled to lead off the third inning, for the second time in three innings to give the Dons a 2-1 lead. Vasquez and Mike Forman, who reached on a walk, made it a 4-1 game when they both scored on Jimmy Waninger's single to right field and Renegade rightfielder Kyle Morgan's throwing error trying to throw out Vasquez at the plate. Morgan's high throw tipped of catcher Ben Prieto's glove allowing Forman to score.
The Dons scored its final run in the sixth on Morris' RBI-single to center that plated Brett Siegmund from second. Siegmund reach on one of Wild's four walks and moved to second on CJ Rice's groundout to second.
Morris led the Dons' 10-hit attack with his 3 for 5 performance at the plate. He scored two runs and drove in another while Vasquez (2 for 4, 2 RBI) and Jimmy Waninger (2 for 4, 1 RBI) each finished with two hits apiece.
The Dons scored all of their runs off of Bakersfield's Wild who fell to 6-5 with the loss. Wild gave up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits, four walks and a hit batter in 7.2 innings of work. The sophomore righthander struckout four.
