Pirates Moves Into First Place Tie With Dons

SANTA ANA, CA -Visiting Orange Coast College (23-13-1, 14-5-1 OEC) scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to move into a first-place tie with Santa Ana College (28-8-1, 14-5-1 OEC) with a 12-11 win in Orange Empire Conference (OEC) baseball, Tuesday. Stephen Cope's two-out, two-run single to center proved to be the game winner as Stephen Schneider and pinch runner Ricky Stokes came around to score.

The top-ranked Dons took a 11-9 lead into the final stanza, but after Dons' closer Anthony Slama (2-2) struck out Josh Banda to lead off the inning he gave up back-to-back hits to Luke Beck and Schneider. Schneider's double off the left field wall moved Beck to third with one out. After the sixth-ranked Pirates' next batter, Matt Meadows, walked to load the bases Slama struck out Gary Gattis for the second out.

Bobby Slater made it a 11-10 game when he walked on four pitches to set the stage for Cope's game-winning hit.

Michael Forman went 3 for 5 with a pair of homers and three RBIs for Santa Ana. Matt Morris, Rick Taloa and Jimmy Waninger each finished with two hits apiece for the Dons.

The Pirates were led by Matt Meadows was 3 for 4 with three RBIs while Matt Cline, Beck, Schneider and Cope each had two hits.

The series will move to Orange Coast on Thursday (May 5), with the Dons and Pirates making up a game suspended from March 17 in the top of the 11th inning and the score tied, 8-8.

On Deck: Santa Ana College (28-8-1, 14-5-1 OEC) at Orange Coast College (23-13-1, 14-5-1 OEC), Thursday, May 5, 1:30 (completion of March 17 game) followed by regularly scheduled game at 2:30 p.m.
