Cypress Snaps Santa Ana's Winning Streak, 5-2

SANTA ANA, CA - Nick Rhodes and Wes Etheridge combine on five-hitter as second-ranked Cypress College (20-10, 9-6 OEC) snapped top-ranked Santa Ana College's eight-game winning streak with a 5-2 win in Orange Empire Conference baseball action, Tuesday. Taylor Green went 3 for 5 and scored a run as the Chargers, who ended a four-game losing skid of its own, moved to within a game-and-a-half of the OEC-leading Dons (23-7-1, 10-4-1 OEC).

Cypress jumped out to a 5-0 with two runs in the second and three in the third off Santa Ana starter Paul Canedo who fell to 6-2 on the year. The freshman lefthander gave up all five runs (two earned) on nine hits, two walks and a wild pitch. Canedo struck out four.

Rhodes (4-2) picked up the win allowing just two runs on four hits, two walks and two hit batters in five innings of work. Etheridge, who notched his second save of the season, gave up just one hit and one walk over the final four innings and got the Chargers out of jams in the sixth and eight innings.

Offensively the Dons were led by Jacob Vasquez who finished 2 for 3 with an RBI. Vasquez, who now has 17 multi-hit games this season, hit his third home run in two games and now has eight on the year. Jose Chavez drove in the other Santa Ana run with an RBI-double.

Cypress had three players finish with two or more hits in Green (3 for 5), Jacob Luque (2 for 4) and Garland Jamison (2 for 3, 1 RBI).
