Rodriguez, East Los Angeles Stymie Santa Ana, 9-5
SANTA ANA, CA - East Los Angeles College's Chris Rodriguez allowed three runs (two earned) and scattered nine hits as the 13th-ranked Huskies upset third-ranked Santa Ana College, 9-5, in non-conference baseball action, Wednesday. Rodriguez, who struck out six and walked three in 7.1 innings of work, evened his record at 1-1 with the win.
Offensively, the Dons out hit the Huskies, 13-5, but failed to come up with timely hits stranding 15 base runners in the loss. Rick Taloa and Jimmy Waninger each tallied three hits in the game. Taloa finished 3 for 5 with 3 RBI including a solo home run in the seventh and a two-run single in the eighth while Waninger was 3 for 6 with an RBI. Matt Morris and Brett Siegmund each had two hits apiece.
The Huskies took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on Chris Lopez's bases loaded double to right-center off Dons' start Daniel Arizmendi (2-1) who suffered the loss. Arizmendi worked himself into a jam in the inning walking two and hitting a batter before Lopez, who finished 2 for 5 with 3 RBI, connected with his two-out hit. Michael Diaz (2 for 4) also had two hits in the win for East Los Angeles.
Arizmendi allowed five earned runs on five hits and four walks over five innings before giving way to reliever Elliott Tyson. Arizmendi also struck out four.
